The name is commonly interpreted as relating to knowledge or revelation, with etymological debates remaining unsettled among scholars. In folklore, the Vedeliigid are not a single creature but a category of knowledgeable beings whose identity and form can vary by tale or region.

In traditional accounts, Vedeliigid dwell near sites considered ancient or sacred—stone circles, springs, groves, and old burial mounds—where they guard hidden or precious knowledge. They may appear as elderly human figures, shimmering silhouettes, or even shapeshift into animals. Possessing deep memory and perceptive insight, they can reveal truths, translate forgotten runes, or foresee consequences of action.
