Varikoosivena, commonly known as varicose veins, are enlarged, twisted veins that often appear on the legs. They develop when the valves within the veins become weakened or damaged. These valves are crucial for preventing blood from flowing backward as it travels up towards the heart. When they fail, blood can pool in the veins, causing them to stretch and bulge.

Several factors can contribute to the development of varicose veins. Genetics plays a significant role, meaning a family history of varicose veins increases an individual's risk. Age is another factor, as vein walls and valves can weaken over time. Prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, and pregnancy can also increase pressure within the leg veins, leading to their formation. Hormonal changes, particularly during pregnancy or menopause, can also contribute by relaxing vein walls.

Symptoms of varicose veins can range from mild to severe. The most obvious sign is the appearance of bulging, rope-like veins, often purple or blue in color. Other symptoms may include aching or heaviness in the legs, swollen ankles and feet, a throbbing or cramping sensation, and itchy skin over the affected veins. In some cases, more serious complications like skin ulcers or bleeding can occur, though this is less common.

Treatment for varicose veins depends on the severity of the condition and the presence of symptoms. For mild cases, lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, elevating the legs, and wearing compression stockings can be effective in managing symptoms and preventing progression. For more significant varicose veins or those causing discomfort, medical interventions may be necessary. These can include procedures like sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the vein to close it, or endovenous ablation, which uses heat to seal the vein. In some instances, surgical removal of the affected veins may be recommended.
