Vaihteenvalintajärjestelmä, commonly known as a gear selector system, is a crucial component in vehicles that allows the driver to select the desired gear. This system is most commonly found in automatic transmission vehicles, but similar mechanisms exist for manual transmissions as well. In automatic transmissions, the gear selector typically offers positions such as Park (P), Reverse (R), Neutral (N), and Drive (D). Some systems may also include lower gear selections like L or 1 and 2 for enhanced engine braking or control in specific driving conditions.

The operation of a gear selector can vary depending on the vehicle's technology. Older systems often used mechanical linkages to physically move the gearshift. Modern vehicles increasingly employ electronic gear selectors, also known as shift-by-wire systems. In these systems, driver input is transmitted electronically to the transmission control unit, which then actuates the gears. Electronic selectors can be designed in various forms, including traditional levers, rotary knobs, or even buttons, offering designers more flexibility in interior layout.

The primary function of the gear selector is to ensure the vehicle operates safely and efficiently. The Park position mechanically locks the transmission, preventing the vehicle from rolling. Reverse allows for backward movement, Neutral disengages the engine from the drivetrain, and Drive engages the forward gears.
