VPN clients are software applications or components built into operating systems that enable a device to connect to a virtual private network (VPN). They authenticate the user or device, negotiate a secure tunnel with a VPN server or gateway, and route network traffic through that tunnel. Common protocols used by VPN clients include OpenVPN, WireGuard, IPsec (IKEv2), L2TP/IPsec, and SSTP, among others. Depending on configuration, a VPN client can route all traffic or only traffic addressed to the remote network, a mode known as full tunneling or split tunneling.
