Universitetai are higher education institutions that provide undergraduate and postgraduate education, conduct research, and contribute to cultural and public life. The term is used in Lithuanian and other languages to denote organizations that grant degrees and pursue scholarly work. Globally, universities vary in structure and scope, but share core roles in education, knowledge creation, and societal development.

Most universities offer bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs across multiple disciplines. They are typically organized into faculties, schools, or departments, with libraries, research institutes, and student services. In many countries they operate under accreditation systems that evaluate quality and ensure standards, while degrees are recognized by national education authorities and employers.

Governance commonly involves a rector or president, an academic senate or equivalent body, and a board of trustees or governors. Financing combines public funding, tuition fees, research grants, and private endowments. Universities engage with industry and government through partnerships, technology transfer, and service programs, and increasingly pursue international collaboration.

Universities vary by type across countries. Common categories include comprehensive universities, which cover a broad range of disciplines; technical or polytechnic universities, focused on engineering and applied sciences; and specialized research institutions with a primary research mission. The public–private mix, program selection, and degree structures reflect national education policies and legal frameworks.

Historically, the modern university emerged in medieval Europe and spread worldwide, evolving from autonomous studia into institutions with governance bodies and broad research missions. In contemporary contexts, universities complement vocational education and increasingly integrate online learning, international collaboration, and lifelong learning to adapt to social and economic change.
