Undervisningsmiljø

Undervisningsmiljø refers to the overall conditions in which teaching and learning occur, and is used in Danish and Norwegian educational contexts. It covers physical space, the social climate of the classroom, and the psychological well-being of students and staff, as well as the educational materials and digital tools available to support learning.

Physical aspects include classroom size and layout, furniture ergonomics, acoustics, lighting, ventilation, temperature, accessibility for students with disabilities, safety, and the organization of common areas. A well-designed environment supports concentration, reduces strain, and enables inclusive participation.

Social and pedagogical aspects involve teacher-student relationships, behavior management, inclusive teaching practices, collaboration and group work, and a culture that values respect, diversity, and student voice. An effective undervisningsmiljø fosters motivation, reduces stress, and supports varied learning needs through adaptable instructional approaches.

Digital and informational aspects cover access to computers or tablets, reliable internet, software and learning platforms, digital literacy, data privacy, and appropriate guidance for using online resources. The digital dimension should complement and integrate with the physical and social environment.

Policy and governance include school rules, safety policies, risk assessments, wellbeing strategies, and mechanisms for ongoing evaluation and improvement. Involvement of students, staff, and families, as well as collaboration with external experts, helps ensure the environment remains usable, safe, and supportive for all learners.

Why it matters: a positive undervisningsmiljø is linked to learning outcomes, equity, and student well-being. Challenges may arise from resource limitations, aging facilities, or competing demands, making deliberate planning and regular review essential.
