Umpe

Umpe is a fictional town and municipality in the archipelago nation of Neridia, commonly cited in regional planning case studies. It lies on the southern coast of Verdan Bay, occupying about 42 square kilometers along a tidal estuary where freshwater from the River Lira mixes with seawater. The climate is temperate maritime, with mild winters, cool summers, and relatively high humidity.

Historically, Umpe was founded in the 17th century by fishermen and coastal artisans. It developed as a carpentry and shipbuilding outpost and remained a small town through the 19th century. The 20th century brought port improvements and road connections that spurred diversification into agriculture, processing, and light manufacturing. The population grew to a peak around the 1960s before stabilizing at a smaller size due to urban migration.

Governance is administered by a mayor and a town council elected for four-year terms. The economy relies on fishing, aquaculture, light manufacturing, and seasonal tourism. The harbor hosts markets, seafood processing facilities, and service businesses. The annual Sailors’ Week festival attracts visitors with boat races, folk music, and craft fairs.

Neridian is the official language, while Umpean, a regional dialect, is spoken by many residents; English is commonly used in commerce.
