Ulkimaalit

Ulkimaalit are exterior paints and coatings applied to the outside surfaces of buildings. They are formulated to withstand weather, sun exposure, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. The term derives from Finnish ulk- meaning exterior and maali meaning paint, and is used in building and coating contexts to distinguish outdoor finishes from interior paints.

Common types include water-based acrylic or acrylic-latex paints, silicone- and elastomeric coatings, silicate (silica-based) paints for mineral substrates, and alkyd-based finishes for wood and metal. Finishes range from matte to high-gloss; higher-gloss coatings often offer greater washability and durability on exposed surfaces. Substrate compatibility varies, with mineral, wood, metal, and fiber cement surfaces each requiring appropriate formulations and, in some cases, primers.

Application typically involves thorough surface cleaning and repair, priming where needed, and applying multiple coats according to manufacturer instructions. Proper curing and suitable weather conditions are important for performance. In Nordic climates, Ulkimaalit are chosen for elasticity, freeze-thaw resistance, and UV protection to minimize cracking and fading.

Performance factors include moisture barriers, UV resistance, breathability, mildew resistance, and low volatile organic compound (VOC) content. Selection considerations include substrate type, local climate, building age, aesthetic goals, and environmental or health considerations. Maintenance practices and recoating intervals vary with product and exposure, commonly ranging from roughly five to fifteen years.
