Uimtumas

Uimtumas is a Lithuanian term for the subjective state of sleepiness or drowsiness, often described as the need to sleep or a reduced level of alertness. It can be a temporary sensation after inadequate sleep or a longer‑standing issue that affects daily functioning.

Common causes include insufficient or poor‑quality sleep, misalignment of the circadian rhythm (such as shift work), use of sedating medications or substances like alcohol, and medical conditions that affect wakefulness. Sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, or hypersomnia can also lead to persistent daytime sleepiness. Other factors may include depression, anxiety, chronic pain, anemia, thyroid problems, and infections.

Symptoms typically involve yawning, heavy eyelids, difficulty concentrating, slower thinking, memory lapses, and a tendency to unintentionally drift into brief episodes of sleep. Daytime sleepiness can impair performance at work or school, and may increase the risk of accidents. The onset and severity vary with the underlying cause and individual circumstances.

Diagnosis generally starts with a clinical evaluation and a review of sleep history. Clinicians may use sleepiness scales such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and may order tests to rule out contributing conditions. Objective assessments can include sleep studies like polysomnography or actigraphy, and, when narcolepsy is suspected, multiple sleep latency testing.

Management focuses on addressing the underlying cause and improving sleep quality. This can involve better sleep hygiene, regular sleep schedules, treating sleep disorders (for example, CPAP for sleep apnea), adjusting medications, and, in some cases, wake‑promoting therapies under medical supervision. Safety considerations, such as avoiding driving when acutely sleepy, are important.

Prognosis varies; many people improve with lifestyle changes and targeted treatment, while persistent sleepiness may require ongoing medical care to manage chronic conditions. Seek evaluation if sleepiness is severe, worsens, or is accompanied by snoring or breathing pauses.
