Törmäyssensorit, or crash sensors, are devices designed to detect a collision or impact. They are crucial components in various safety systems, most notably in automotive airbags. When a sudden deceleration or impact force exceeds a predetermined threshold, the sensor triggers a signal. This signal then activates other safety mechanisms, such as deploying airbags, tightening seatbelts, or even shutting down the vehicle's engine to prevent further damage or injury.

There are several types of crash sensors, each employing different technologies. Accelerometers are commonly used, measuring changes in velocity. Piezoelectric sensors utilize materials that generate an electrical charge when subjected to mechanical stress, effectively converting the impact force into a measurable electrical signal. Other types include strain gauges and MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensors, which offer miniaturization and high sensitivity.

The placement of crash sensors within a vehicle is critical. They are strategically positioned to detect impacts from various directions, including frontal, side, and rear collisions, as well as rollovers. The data from multiple sensors is often processed by an electronic control unit (ECU) that makes the decision to deploy safety systems. The sensitivity and response time of these sensors are paramount to ensuring timely and effective activation of safety features, thereby minimizing the risk of injury to occupants. Beyond automotive applications, similar technologies are found in industrial equipment, robotics, and sports safety gear to detect impacts and prevent damage or injury.
