Täköön

Täköön is a Finnish verb form that appears primarily in literary, formal, or archaic language. It is used to express a wish, a blessing, or a request that something may be true or occur, roughly equivalent to “may it be so” or “let it be.” In everyday Finnish, this optative function is usually conveyed with other constructions such as olkoon or with more direct expressions, but täköön retains a place in historical, religious, or ceremonial writing.

Morphology and usage notes: Täköön is formed with the jussive (optative) suffix -köön/-koon attached to a verb stem. The form is closely related to other jussive endings in Finnish, such as tehköön from tehdä. However, täköön is often treated as a fixed or fossilized form and is far less common in contemporary speech than more everyday alternatives. Its appearance is typical of older or elevated Finnish, and it commonly appears in set phrases or stylistic passages rather than as a productive everyday verb form.

Context and examples: In practice, täköön is used to state a wish or offer a formal assertion. Examples in literature or religious texts might resemble phrases such as “Täköön niin,” “Täköön se on niin,” or standalone uses where the speaker grants a wish an imperative, ceremonial quality. For comparison, the more common modern equivalents are olkoon (let it be) or toivottavasti (hopefully), which are more frequent in current usage.
