Työpöytäpohjaisuus, or desktop-centricity, refers to a computing paradigm where the primary user interface and experience are centered around a graphical desktop environment. This typically involves a visual display with icons, windows, menus, and a pointer-driven interaction model, akin to a physical desktop. Users can open multiple applications simultaneously, each represented by a window, and switch between them easily. Files and folders are often visualized as icons, allowing for drag-and-drop operations and direct manipulation.

This model contrasts with command-line interfaces (CLIs), where users interact with the system by typing text commands, and with mobile interfaces, which are optimized for touchscreens and smaller displays. The desktop-centric approach has been the dominant model for personal computers since the advent of graphical user interfaces (GUIs) like those found in early Macintosh and Windows operating systems. It facilitates multitasking and a rich visual feedback loop, making it intuitive for a wide range of users.

Key elements of desktop-centricity include the concept of the desktop itself as a workspace, taskbars or docks for managing running applications, and file managers for organizing data. While newer computing paradigms have emerged, such as cloud-based computing and specialized mobile operating systems, the desktop metaphor remains influential and continues to be the core of many modern computing experiences. The term emphasizes the traditional way of interacting with a computer, focusing on the visual organization and management of resources on a persistent digital workspace.
