Trämaterial refers to materials derived from trees, primarily used in construction, furniture making, and various industrial applications. The two main categories of wood materials are solid wood and engineered wood. Solid wood is harvested directly from trees and processed into lumber, planks, or beams. It is known for its natural beauty, strength, and durability, but can be susceptible to warping, cracking, and insect damage. Common examples include pine, oak, and maple.

Engineered wood products are manufactured by binding together wood fibers, particles, or veneers with adhesives or other binding agents. This process often results in materials that are more stable, consistent, and cost-effective than solid wood. Plywood, particleboard, and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) are common types of engineered wood. Plywood consists of thin layers of wood veneer glued together, offering good strength and stability. Particleboard is made from wood particles, while MDF is produced from wood fibers, both commonly used for furniture and cabinetry.

The properties of trämaterial vary greatly depending on the tree species, the processing method, and any treatments applied. Wood is a renewable resource when forests are managed sustainably. Its use offers environmental benefits, including carbon sequestration. However, improper harvesting can lead to deforestation and habitat loss. Wood materials are also combustible and require appropriate fire protection measures.
