Trismegistus

Trismegistus, or Hermes Trismegistus, is the legendary author and sage of the Hermetic tradition. The epithet Trismegistus means “thrice great” in Greek, signaling a supreme level of wisdom attributed to this figure.

Origins and identity: Hermes Trismegistus is a syncretic fusion of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth, reflecting Hellenistic Egypt’s cultural blending, especially in Alexandria. He is commonly regarded as a symbolic representative of esoteric knowledge rather than a historical person.

The Hermetic corpus: The core body of writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, the Hermetic literature, was composed mainly in the early centuries CE, with most surviving texts in Greek and later translations into Latin and other languages. The best-known works include the Corpus Hermeticum and the Asclepius. The dialogues present Hermes instructing a disciple on gnosis, the nature of God, the cosmos, and the path to spiritual rebirth.
