Trikots

Trikot is the German term for a sports jersey or shirt worn as part of a team’s uniform. It identifies players and teams and commonly includes the team’s colors, sponsor logos, league insignia, as well as player names and numbers on the back. In cycling, the word Trikot is also used for race jerseys that designate leaders or champions, such as a leader’s or overall classification jersey.

Modern Trikots are typically made from lightweight, moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics to keep players dry and comfortable during activity. The design combines team colors and branding with practical features such as breathable panels and streamlined fits. Decoration is achieved through methods like sublimation, heat transfer, or embroidery. Many leagues and federations regulate aspects of the kit, including color, placement and size of numbers and sponsor logos, and mandatory visibility requirements for safety and identification.

Historically, Trikots progressed from heavy wool garments in the 19th century to the synthetic, performance-focused shirts used today. The introduction of home and away kits helped prevent color clashes, and goalkeeper Trikots developed distinct colors for clear player differentiation. In German-speaking countries, the terms Heim-Trikot and Auswärts-Trikot describe a team’s home and away kits, while fans often use Trikot to mean the official team shirt as a symbol of identity. Beyond competition, Trikots are also produced for training, casual wear, and merchandising, reflecting both functional and cultural aspects of sport.
