Trendianalüüs, commonly known in English as trend analysis, refers to the systematic examination of historical data points to identify patterns and predict future developments. The practice dates back to early statistical studies in the 19th century, when economists began using simple moving averages to forecast market behavior. Over time, the methodology was refined in fields such as finance, marketing, meteorology, and industrial engineering, incorporating more sophisticated smoothing and forecasting techniques.

Key components of trendianalüüs include data collection, graphing of values over time, and the application of statistical tools such as linear regression, exponential smoothing, and decomposition of time series into trend, seasonal, and irregular components. Analysts often use visual methods—line charts, bar graphs, or scatterplot matrices—to detect upward or downward movements, turning points, and cyclical behavior. Modern trend analysis frequently employs software such as R, Python’s pandas and statsmodels libraries, or specialized platforms like SPSS and SAS.

Applications span multiple domains: businesses use trendianalüüs to gauge sales trajectories, investors analyze stock price trends for portfolio decisions, governments assess demographic shifts for policy planning, and scientists monitor climate variables for environmental studies. While trend analysis can provide valuable foresight, it also carries limitations, notably its reliance on past data and potential sensitivity to anomalies or structural breaks that may not reflect future conditions.
