Torten

Torten is a term used in German-speaking culinary traditions to describe a class of multi-layer cakes, typically more elaborate than a simple Kuchen. In common usage, a torte consists of thin layers of sponge cake or pastry separated by creams, custards, fruit preserves, ganache, or whipped cream, and finished with a glaze, chocolate coating, or decorative toppings. The fillings and textures vary widely, ranging from light fruit creams to rich chocolate or nut-based fillings.

In German-speaking countries, the distinction between torte and kuchen is often practical rather than strict. Tortes
