Tootmisekulusid, also known as "tooth decay" or "dental caries," refer to the destruction of the hard tissues of the teeth caused primarily by acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. This condition is one of the most common health problems worldwide and affects people of all ages, though it is particularly prevalent in children and adolescents. The process begins when bacteria in plaque—a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth—metabolize sugars from food and beverages, producing acids that erode the tooth enamel over time.

The primary cause of tooth decay is a combination of dietary habits, poor oral hygiene, and bacterial activity. Sugary and starchy foods are especially conducive to bacterial growth, as they provide the fuel needed for acid production. Without proper brushing and flossing, plaque accumulates, leading to demineralization of the enamel and the formation of cavities. Risk factors also include frequent snacking, dry mouth (xerostomia), certain medications, and genetic predispositions.

Prevention of tooth decay involves maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and using mouthwash. Limiting sugar intake and consuming a balanced diet rich in calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D also strengthens tooth enamel. Additionally, dental check-ups every six months help detect early signs of decay and allow for professional cleanings and treatments like fluoride applications or dental sealants.

When left untreated, tooth decay can progress to affect deeper layers of the tooth, leading to pain, infection, and even tooth loss. In severe cases, it may require procedures such as fillings, root canals, or extractions. Early intervention is key to preserving dental health and preventing complications. Public health initiatives, including water fluoridation and educational programs, have played significant roles in reducing the prevalence of tooth decay in many regions.
