ToggleGelenk

ToggleGelenk, commonly known in English as a toggle joint or toggle mechanism, is a mechanical linkage used to convert rotary or negative rotation into a near-linear output motion and to amplify force. The term is used in German-speaking engineering contexts, where Togglegelenk describes a two-link linkage with a pivot connection.

A typical toggle joint consists of two rigid links connected at one end by a hinge and attached to fixed points or other links at their opposite ends. As the input link moves, the two links swing toward alignment, and the output point follows a nearly straight path. The configuration produces high mechanical advantage when the links approach straight-line alignment, enabling the output to resist large loads with relatively small input effort.

Applications of toggle joints include clamps, presses, straightening or forming mechanisms, and folding or locking devices. They are favored where a strong holding force is required with a compact and simple mechanism. In practice, the motion is non-linear, and the force increases rapidly near the aligned position, which can complicate control and require careful tolerancing and lubrication. Due to this characteristic, toggle joints are commonly used in manual and power clamps, bench vises, and certain door or lid-closure mechanisms.

Variants such as double-toggle configurations improve stiffness and locking reliability by distributing load across multiple links. Designers consider clearances, friction, and potential self-locking behavior in the selected geometry.
