Thumbfriendly

Thumbfriendly is a term used in user experience design to describe interfaces and products that are easy to operate with the user's thumb on handheld devices, especially smartphones. It emphasizes one-handed usability and minimizes reach by keeping primary controls within the area most accessible during typical grip.

It applies to software interfaces (mobile apps and mobile websites) as well as hardware ergonomics. Design decisions consider hand size variation, device orientation, and user left- or right-handedness, with an emphasis on predictable navigation and reduced finger travel.

Guidelines include placing essential actions within the thumb reach zone, commonly the lower portion of the screen, and using large, clearly labeled touch targets (the widely cited minimum is 48 by 48 device-independent pixels). Avoid placing critical controls near the top corners or behind complex gestures; prefer bottom navigation bars, bottom sheets, and single-column layouts that support one-handed use.

Patterns include bottom navigation, persistent bottom bars for primary actions, emphasis on swipe or tap gestures that do not require long reaches, and support for one-handed modes or adjustable UI. Designers balance thumb reach with other needs, such as multi-window use, accessibility, and screen real estate.

Evaluation commonly uses usability testing, reachability analysis, and analytics for task success under one-handed use. Critics note that optimizing for thumb reach alone can conflict with legibility, accessibility, or two-handed use, and recommend configurable layouts and orientation-aware designs.
