Terrassenersatz

Terrassenersatz is a German term used in architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning to describe a substitute or replacement for a traditional terrace. The concept is descriptive rather than a single technical standard, and it can refer to any solution that serves the function and spatial qualities of a terrace when a conventional terrace cannot be built or maintained.

The term encompasses a range of possible implementations. Typical forms include raised decks or platforms, often made of timber, composite materials or concrete; roof terraces or balcony extensions that replicate the outdoor access and social use of a terrace; cantilevered or façade-integrated terrace elements that maintain transparency and connection to outdoor space; and ground-level or terraced landscaping designed to provide outdoor living areas in constrained or sloped sites. In some cases, terrassen ersatz also involves partially replacing a terrace with alternative outdoor rooms or patios that achieve similar sunlight exposure, views and circulation patterns.
