Retrofitting is the process of adding new technology, upgrading, or replacing components in an existing building, vehicle, or infrastructure to improve performance, efficiency, safety, or resilience without full replacement. It is distinguished from new construction or complete redevelopment and can target energy use, emissions, structural integrity, or accessibility.

In buildings, common retrofit measures include upgrading insulation, installing high-performance windows, replacing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems with more efficient units, deploying energy management and smart controls, upgrading lighting to LEDs, and adding on-site generation or improved water fixtures. Seismic retrofitting and flood-mitigation improvements may also be pursued to increase resilience.

In transportation and industry, retrofitting may involve electrifying or hybridizing engines, upgrading emission-control systems, enhancing engine performance, implementing energy-efficient drivetrains, or incorporating heat-recovery and other energy-saving technologies. Industrial facilities may adopt process optimization, waste heat recovery, or modular equipment upgrades to reduce energy use and emissions.

The retrofit process typically involves an assessment of performance gaps, a planning and design phase, financing and procurement, installation or modification work, and post-installation monitoring to verify outcomes. Benefits include lower energy costs, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, extended asset life, improved safety and comfort, and increased resilience. Challenges include upfront capital costs, disruption during work, compatibility with existing systems, and uncertain payback periods.

Policy frameworks, standards, and incentives often support retrofitting, with building codes, financing programs, and performance-based targets encouraging energy efficiency, seismic resilience, or flood mitigation. Effective retrofitting requires consideration of life-cycle costs, long-term savings, and the specific context of the asset.
