Teletypeympäristöjä, often referred to as "teletype environments" in English, were early computing systems that relied on teletype machines as the primary input and output devices. These systems were prevalent from the 1960s through the 1970s, serving as a crucial bridge between the punch card era and the more interactive graphical interfaces of today.

In a teletype environment, users would interact with a mainframe computer by typing commands and data on a teletypewriter. This device would then transmit the input to the computer and print the computer's responses on paper. The experience was inherently sequential; users sent a command, waited for the computer to process it, and then received the output before they could issue the next command. This made for a relatively slow and asynchronous interaction compared to modern systems.

These environments were instrumental in the development of time-sharing operating systems, which allowed multiple users to access a single computer simultaneously via their individual teletype terminals. This sharing of resources made computing more accessible and cost-effective for many organizations. The simplicity of the teletype interface also fostered the development of command-line interfaces (CLIs), which are still in use today in various forms.
