Tapetsering

Tapetsering, or upholstery, is the craft of padding and covering furniture with fabric, leather, or other materials, and often involves repair of the underlying frame and spring system. The work is common on seating such as chairs, sofas, and ottomans, as well as cushions and decorative benches. Traditionally, tapetsering combines carpentry with fabric work to restore comfort and appearance.

Typical materials include upholstery fabric or leather, foam or other padding, and cushioning materials such as cotton batting or horsehair. The structural elements involve a wooden frame, webbing, and springs. Modern upholstery commonly uses polyurethane foam, synthetic padding, and durable fabrics. Finishing touches may include piping, buttons, tufting, and decorative nails or studs.

The process generally starts with assessment and removal of old fabric. The upholsterer inspects and repairs the frame, replaces worn webbing and springs, and adds padding. A new fabric cover is cut, fitted, and attached with staples, tacks, or hog rings, with details such as piping or tufting added. The piece is trimmed and tested for comfort and durability.

Tapetsering is a skilled trade often performed by professional upholsterers or furniture restorers, though experienced DIY enthusiasts may handle simple projects. Quality work can extend the life of furniture and preserve historic pieces. Training can be gained through apprenticeships, vocational courses, or specialized workshops.
