Taktabstand
Taktabstand is a German term that refers to the time or time interval between successive vehicles or trains in traffic or rail systems. In road traffic theory it is also called “headway” and represents the time elapsing between the passage of two vehicles at a reference point. The concept is closely linked to safe following distance, which is calculated from drivers’ reaction time and vehicle speed. A short Taktabstand allows higher traffic density and increases road capacity, but it also raises collision risk, especially at high speeds. Therefore, traffic engineers use Taktabstand as a key parameter for designing signal timings, lane widths and speed limits to balance efficiency and safety.
In railway operations the term is used to describe the spacing between train departures at a station
Measurement of Taktabstand can be performed manually using stop‑watches or by analysing GPS and sensor data
