Tagebaue, in plural form, describe open-pit mining operations where minerals, most prominently lignite coal, are extracted from an exposed pit rather than from underground workings. In lignite mining, large masses of overburden are removed to reach the coal seams, and the excavated material is processed and transported for use in power generation or industry.
