A watercourse is any natural or artificial channel through which flowing water moves. The term encompasses rivers and streams as well as smaller creeks and brooks, and may also include man-made channels such as canals, drainage ditches, and aqueducts that carry water for specific purposes. Watercourses are components of drainage systems that connect precipitation, surface runoff, and groundwater to downstream bodies of water. Their courses are shaped by geology, climate, vegetation, and human activity, and they can be perennial, seasonal, or intermittent.

Natural watercourses: Their beds and banks define a channel that transports water and sediment. Features include headwaters, tributaries, confluences, floodplains, and deltas. Flow regimes vary with weather and season, producing rivers with different step-pool or plane-bed morphologies. Discharge is influenced by precipitation, snowmelt, and groundwater input, and the channel's cross-section evolves through erosion and deposition.

Artificial watercourses: These are engineered to convey water or improve drainage and irrigation. Canals, aqueducts, drainage ditches, and urban storm sewers are typical examples. They often include structures such as weirs, locks, culverts, and levees to regulate flow, water level, and navigation. Management focuses on maintaining conveyance, preventing sediment buildup, and protecting surrounding land from flooding.

Ecology and environment: Watercourses provide habitat for aquatic and riparian species and influence water quality, temperature, and oxygen levels. They are affected by pollution, invasive species, habitat fragmentation, and upstream land use. Restoration efforts may aim to re-meander channels, reconnect floodplains, or improve fish passage.

Human interaction: Watercourses support drinking water, irrigation, industry, recreation, and energy generation. They also pose flood and erosion risks, requiring monitoring, land-use planning, and legal protection of water rights and environmental flows.
