TRWs

TRW, commonly known simply as TRW, was an American multinational corporation with roots in the aerospace, automotive, and information services sectors. The name TRW is an acronym derived from the surnames of the firms that merged to form the company in 1958: Thompson, Ramo, and Wooldridge. Over the decades, TRW grew into a major supplier to government and commercial customers, engaging in complex systems engineering, advanced electronics, and data services.

In aerospace and defense, TRW developed and supplied guidance systems, inertial measurement units, space hardware, and integrated platform solutions used in satellites, missiles, and other space programs. The company played a significant role in NASA and defense projects, contributing to payloads, navigation, and mission-critical subsystems. In the automotive sector, TRW Automotive produced safety-related components such as airbag systems, seatbelts, braking and steering technologies, and other electronic safety devices that became standard in many vehicles.

TRW also operated in information systems and services, providing data, credit information, and technology services to commercial and government clients. In the early 2000s, parts of this business were sold or restructured as TRW reorganized its portfolio.

In 2002, TRW was acquired by Northrop Grumman for about $7.8 billion, with the aerospace and defense units continuing under the Northrop Grumman umbrella and the TRW name gradually changing in visibility within that sector. The automotive business, TRW Automotive, remained a distinct entity for several years and was acquired by ZF Friedrichshafen AG in 2015. Today, the TRW brand exists mainly as a historical reference, but its legacy includes notable contributions to aerospace engineering, defense technology, and automotive safety.
