Sähkökiillotus

Sähkökiillotus, also known as electro polishing or electrochemical polishing, is a surface finishing process used to smooth, polish, and deburr metal parts. It is an electrochemical process where the workpiece is made the anode in an electrolytic cell. The electrolyte, typically a mixture of acids, dissolves the high points of the metal surface more rapidly than the low points, resulting in a smooth, lustrous finish.

The process begins by immersing the metal part in a heated electrolyte solution. An electric current is then applied, with the workpiece acting as the anode and the cathode made of an inert material. This current flow causes a controlled dissolution of the metal surface. Unlike mechanical polishing, which removes material by abrasion, sähkökiillotus removes material electrochemically, leaving a burr-free and stress-relieved surface.

Sähkökiillotus is particularly effective on stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and brass. It is widely used in industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, aerospace, and automotive. The benefits of this process include improved corrosion resistance, enhanced cleanliness due to a smoother surface that is easier to clean and sterilize, and a aesthetically pleasing bright finish. It can also remove surface contaminants and create a passive oxide layer on stainless steel, further enhancing its resistance to corrosion. The depth of material removed is typically very shallow, making it suitable for parts with tight tolerances.
