Sukellusvaatteita, commonly known as wetsuits, are garments designed to provide thermal insulation, abrasion resistance, and buoyancy for activities like diving, surfing, and kayaking. They are typically made from neoprene, a synthetic rubber material that traps a thin layer of water between the suit and the wearer's skin. This trapped water is then warmed by body heat, creating an insulating barrier.

The thickness of the neoprene is a key factor in determining the warmth and flexibility of a wetsuit. Thicker suits offer more insulation but are less flexible, while thinner suits are more flexible but provide less warmth. Wetsuits come in various styles, including full suits that cover the entire body, shorty suits that cover the torso and upper legs, and separate tops and bottoms.

The fit of a wetsuit is crucial for its effectiveness. A well-fitting wetsuit should be snug but not constricting, allowing for a full range of motion without excessive flushing of water. Flushing occurs when cold water enters the suit and replaces the warm, trapped water.

In addition to neoprene wetsuits, drysuits are also used for water sports, particularly in colder conditions. Drysuits are designed to keep the wearer completely dry by creating a watertight seal around the neck, wrists, and ankles. They are typically worn with insulating undergarments.

The choice of wetsuit or drysuit depends on factors such as water temperature, activity type, and personal preference. Proper care, including rinsing with fresh water and drying out of direct sunlight, can help prolong the life of these specialized garments.
