Sugamo
Sugamo is a district in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, Japan. It is known for its shopping street, Sugamo Jizo-dori, which is a popular destination for elderly shoppers and often referred to as "Harajuku for grandmas." The street features a variety of shops selling traditional Japanese goods, clothing, food, and health products. A prominent landmark is Kogan-ji Temple, famous for its Togenuki Jizo statue, believed to have healing powers. Visitors can wash a part of the statue corresponding to the part of their body they wish to heal. Sugamo also has a connection to the Imperial Family, as the former residence of Empress Shoken, the Meiji Jingu Garden, is located nearby. The district retains a nostalgic and traditional atmosphere, contrasting with the modern urban landscape of Tokyo. It offers a glimpse into older Japanese culture and provides a relaxed shopping experience. Sugamo is easily accessible by public transport, making it a convenient place to visit for those interested in a more traditional side of Tokyo. The area hosts various festivals and events throughout the year, further contributing to its cultural appeal.
