Subkeyboards are compact, portable mechanical keyboards designed for users who prioritize mobility and efficiency over full-sized layouts. Unlike traditional keyboards, subkeyboards typically feature a reduced key count, often following layouts such as the 60%, 65%, or 75% configurations, which omit dedicated arrow keys, navigation clusters, and sometimes media controls. These designs prioritize space-saving while retaining essential functionality, making them popular among gamers, programmers, and travelers.

The most common subkeyboard layout is the 60%, which replaces the full-sized keyboard’s arrow cluster with a single "thumb cluster" or "tenkeyless" (TKL) design, eliminating the number row. Some variants include a "65%" layout, which retains the number row but still omits the arrow keys, or a "75%" layout, which adds a small function row. These layouts often require users to rely on alternative methods—such as mouse gestures or dedicated software—for navigation and media control.

Subkeyboards are typically built with mechanical switches, offering tactile feedback and durability compared to membrane keyboards. They are often customizable, allowing users to modify keycaps, switch types, and even firmware via tools like QMK or VIAL. Popular brands in this space include Keychron, Durgod, and GMMK (Glorious Modular Keyboard), which cater to both beginners and enthusiasts with modular and prebuilt options.

Despite their advantages, subkeyboards may require an adjustment period due to their reduced key placement, particularly for users accustomed to full-sized layouts. However, their portability and ergonomic benefits make them a favored choice for those seeking a balance between functionality and compactness.
