Stresori

Stresori are factors or situations that require adaptation and elicit a stress response in an organism. The term is used in Romanian to refer to external or internal demands that challenge homeostasis and trigger physiological, emotional, or cognitive reactions. Stresori can vary widely in intensity, duration, and predictability.

Stresori are commonly categorized by source and characteristics. Physical stressors include extreme temperatures, noise, trauma, and toxins. Psychological or social stressors cover cognitive demands, time pressure, social conflict, bereavement, and perceived injustice. Environmental stressors encompass pollution, crowding, natural disasters, and chronic hardship. Occupational stressors arise from workload, role ambiguity, low control, and job insecurity. Stressors can be acute, lasting for a short time, or chronic, persisting over weeks or months, and they can be perceived as either threatening (distress) or, in some cases, stimulating or rewarding (eustress).

Measurement of exposure to stressors often relies on self-report scales assessing perceived difficulty, frequency, and impact, complemented by objective indicators in research and occupational health. The effects of stressors are mediated by biological systems, notably the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and autonomic nervous system, contributing to allostatic load. Health outcomes associated with persistent stressors include mental health issues, cardiovascular risk, sleep disturbance, and impaired immunity, though responses vary among individuals.

Understanding stresori is important in psychology, medicine, and public health for assessing risk, designing coping interventions, and promoting resilience. It also informs workplace policies, environmental planning, and community support programs aimed at reducing harmful exposure and enhancing adaptive coping strategies.
