Storers

Storers are workers or roles involved in storing items or information, spanning industries such as warehousing, retail, archives, libraries, museums, and information technology. The term is a generic designation for those responsible for the safekeeping and retrieval of goods or data.

In physical storage, responsibilities include receiving shipments, labeling, organizing on shelves or in racks, tracking inventory, maintaining conditions (temperature, humidity, light, pest control), and ensuring secure storage and timely retrieval. In information contexts, storers may handle data archiving, backup storage, and controlled access to records, ensuring data integrity and compliance with retention schedules.

Work environments vary from warehouses and distribution centers to archival rooms, libraries, and data centers. In smaller operations, roles may be fulfilled by one person, while larger organizations employ dedicated storekeepers, inventories, archivists, or data-storage technicians.

Key skills include organization, attention to detail, basic knowledge of storage technologies (racks, shelving, climate controls, barcoding or RFID, inventory software). Safety and regulatory compliance, loss prevention, and documentation practices are important.

The concept of storage roles exists since ancient times in granaries and storehouses; modern terminology typically uses specific titles such as storekeeper, custodian, archivist, or inventory manager.
