Stimuleerija

Stimuleerija is the Estonian term for a stimulant, a substance that increases activity in the central nervous system. Stimulants raise alertness, attention, energy, and mood, and they are used medically as well as in recreational contexts. They vary from widely available legal substances to prescription medicines and illegal drugs.

In pharmacology, stimulants are often grouped as psychostimulants. This includes amphetamine-type drugs (such as amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, lisdexamfetamine), methylphenidate, and wakefulness-promoting agents like modafinil. Non-prescription stimulants include caffeine and nicotine; different countries regulate various stimulant compounds to different extents. Safety and risks: common adverse effects are insomnia, anxiety, increased heart rate or blood pressure, reduced appetite, and stomach upset. Potential risks include dependence, withdrawal, and, with misuse or high doses, psychiatric symptoms or cardiovascular complications. Use in pregnancy is typically advised against or limited.

Legal status varies: many stimulants are controlled substances with strict prescribing rules, while others (such as caffeine and nicotine) are broadly available but carry health risks. The term stimuleerija thus covers a range of substances with differing medical, social, and legal implications.
