Steroidoterapia

Steroidoterapia, also known as corticosteroid therapy, is a medical treatment that involves the use of synthetic steroid hormones, primarily corticosteroids. These medications are potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agents. They work by mimicking the effects of natural hormones produced by the adrenal glands, but at much higher concentrations.

The primary indications for steroidoterapia include a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. This encompasses diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. They are also used to manage allergic reactions, prevent organ transplant rejection, and treat certain types of cancer.

Steroidoterapia can be administered in various forms, including oral tablets, injections (intravenous, intramuscular, or intra-articular), inhaled preparations, and topical creams or ointments. The route of administration and dosage depend on the specific condition being treated and its severity.

While highly effective, corticosteroids are associated with a significant number of potential side effects, especially with long-term use or high doses. These can include weight gain, mood changes, increased risk of infection, bone thinning (osteoporosis), elevated blood sugar levels, and skin thinning. Therefore, medical supervision is crucial to monitor for and manage these side effects, and treatment is often tapered gradually rather than stopped abruptly. The goal is to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration to minimize risks.
