Sterilitetsstatus

Sterilitetsstatus, literally the status of sterility, is a medical and breeding term used to denote whether an individual or animal is unable to reproduce (sterile) or capable of reproduction (fertile). The concept is used in human medicine, veterinary science, and wildlife management to guide clinical decisions, family planning, and breeding programs.

In humans, sterilitetsstatus is determined through clinical evaluation supported by laboratory testing. For males, semen analysis assessing volume, sperm concentration, motility and morphology, together with hormonal evaluation (testosterone, FSH, LH) and physical examination for obstructions or varicoceles, helps classify fertility status. For females, assessment may include ovulatory function, ovarian reserve (AMH and antral follicle count), and evaluation of tubal patency and uterine factors, with imaging or diagnostic procedures as indicated. In some cases, genetic or enzymatic tests are relevant.

Sterility implies an absolute or near-absolute inability to conceive under natural conditions, whereas infertility describes a reduced probability of pregnancy that may be partial or temporary. The distinction is not always absolute in practice because outcomes depend on age, partner fertility, and available treatments. Sterilitetsstatus informs choices about treatment options such as assisted reproductive technologies, fertility preservation, or, in the case of permanent sterility, options like adoption or use of donor gametes. In veterinary and conservation contexts, sterilitetsstatus guides breeding plans, management decisions, and genetic strategy.
