Steiffs

Steiffs are plush animals produced by Steiff GmbH, a German toy company based in Giengen an der Brenz. The term is commonly used by collectors to refer to the brand’s teddy bears and other premium stuffed animals, renowned for their craftsmanship and longevity.

Steiff originated with Margarete Steiff, who began making felt animals in the late 19th century after recovering from illness. The business expanded into a factory producing soft toys, and it gained international attention when Richard Steiff, Margarete’s nephew, designed the first jointed bear in 1902. The bears were introduced to the market in the United States after their display at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, where they quickly became popular. The company adopted the button-in-ear trademark around 1904, which became a recognizable sign of authentic Steiff bears and other figures. Early Steiffs were typically made from mohair with movable joints, and they featured finely detailed eyes, noses, and stitching.

Design and production: Steiffs are known for their articulated construction, high-quality mohair or plush fur, and hand-finished features. They range in size from small desk bears to large display models, with variations in fur, eye materials, and limb articulation. Many models carry a manufacturers’ tag and a Steiff button in the ear, small plastic or metal studs, or an accompanying card.

Collecting and significance: Steiffs hold a prominent place in the history of the teddy bear and high-end plush toys. Pre-war examples are particularly valued among collectors, often commanding high prices at auction. The Steiff Museum in Giengen preserves the company’s history and its iconic animals for public display.
