Steiff

Steiff GmbH, commonly known simply as Steiff, is a German toy company based in Giengen an der Brenz, Baden-Württemberg. It was founded in 1880 by Margarete Steiff, a seamstress who, after becoming disabled, began making felt animals and running a small workshop. The firm grew to produce a wide range of stuffed animals and earned a reputation for high-quality craftsmanship, including the use of mohair fur on premium figures.

A major development came in 1902, when Margarete’s nephew, Richard Steiff, designed the first jointed teddy bear. The bear, produced by Steiff, was showcased in Europe and soon attracted a U.S. importer, and orders from America helped launch the teddy bear craze. The bears were notable for their articulated limbs and lifelike appearance, contributing to Steiff’s global prominence. Since the early 20th century, the company has used a distinctive Button in Ear as a mark of authenticity on its products, a feature that identifies genuine Steiff animals.

Today Steiff remains a leading producer of plush toys, offering a range of teddy bears and other animals in various materials and sizes, including limited editions and heirloom pieces. The brand emphasizes craftsmanship, safety, and collectible value. Steiff maintains a museum in Giengen that explores the company’s history and its classic toys, highlighting the legacy of the teddy bear and other Steiff creations in toy culture.
