Steenkrijgt is a rare geological phenomenon characterized by the spontaneous fracturing and movement of bedrock, often accompanied by audible sounds. This event is not typically associated with seismic activity like earthquakes, leading to its unique classification. The term itself, of Dutch origin, translates roughly to "stone fight" or "rock struggle," alluding to the dramatic and seemingly forceful nature of the process.

The precise mechanisms behind steenkrijgt are still a subject of scientific inquiry. Current theories suggest that extreme and rapid temperature fluctuations in the rock can cause internal stresses to build up. When these stresses exceed the rock's tensile strength, it fractures. The sudden release of this stored energy can result in the observed movement and the characteristic cracking or popping sounds. Factors like the composition of the rock, its existing internal fractures, and the rate of temperature change are believed to play significant roles.
