Steelwrought

Steelwrought is a high‑strength, low‑alloy structural steel that combines the toughness and ductility of wrought steels with the corrosion resistance of alloyed steels. It is produced by hot‑rolling billets followed by extensive cold‑working and precise heat‑treatment schedules to achieve tensile strengths of 500–700 MPa while maintaining a charpy V‑impact energy of 100 J at –20 °C. The alloy composition typically includes iron, carbon (0.08–0.10 %), manganese (0.35–0.60 %), chromium (0.30–0.45 %), and small amounts of silicon, molybdenum, and vanadium to refine grain structure and enhance wear resistance.

Introduced in the early 2000s by several European steel manufacturers, steelwrought has since been adopted in a range of engineering applications. Its high tensile strength and excellent weldability make it suitable for bridge construction, offshore platforms, and wind‑turbine towers, where weight savings are critical without compromising structural integrity. In the automotive sector, the material is used for safety‑critical components such as side‑impact beams and roll‑over protection structures. Aerospace designs also employ steelwrought for high‑load frames and landing gear components where a favorable strength‑to‑weight ratio and fatigue resistance are required.

Compared to conventional structural steels such as ASTM A516 and A572, steelwrought offers superior strength at comparable hardness while providing greater elongation at fracture, a result of its advanced micro‑alloying and controlled texture. Standards for steelwrought typically fall within the International Organization for Standardization’s EN 10217 series, with additional specification from specialized manufacturers under product codes such as SW‑700. The material’s performance has been validated through extensive mechanical testing, including static tensile, impact, and fatigue assessments, and it complies with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 quality management and environmental standards.
