Weldability is the ability of a material to be welded under fabrication conditions to produce a joint that has adequate strength, toughness, and structural integrity without unacceptable defects. It reflects how easily the base metal and filler interact during welding and how the cooling and solidification processes affect the finished joint.

Weldability depends on multiple factors, including chemical composition and microstructure, thickness, and the welding process. Carbon content and alloying elements (such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and vanadium) influence hardenability, brittleness, and crack susceptibility. Heat input, preheating, interpass temperature, shielding gas, filler metal compatibility, joint design, and cleanliness all shape the likelihood of defects and the properties of the weld and heat-affected zone.

Common weldability problems include hydrogen-induced cracking, porosity, lack of fusion, and distortion or residual stresses. Remedies involve selecting appropriate filler metals, controlling heat input, preheating or post-weld heat treating when required, improving joint fit-up and cleaning, and following qualified welding procedures.

Different materials have distinct weldability profiles. Low- and high-carbon steels require attention to carbon-equivalent values and hydrogen cracking risk; aluminum alloys pose porosity and oxide-film challenges; stainless steels may crack if improperly heat treated; nickel-based, copper, and titanium alloys require specific filler metals and often tighter control of environment and temperature. The choice of process (MIG, TIG, SMAW, FCAW, or other methods) also affects weldability.

Weldability is assessed within engineering codes and standards. Practically, it is managed through welding procedure specifications (WPS) and qualification records (PQR/WPQ), and by testing welds to standard codes (AWS, ISO). Guidance from standards addresses process parameters, post-weld heat treatment, and nondestructive testing to verify joint quality.
