Statura

Statura, or stature, refers to the vertical dimension of an organism, typically the standing height of a person measured from the top of the head to the floor with the person in an upright position. In humans, stature is a fundamental anthropometric measurement used to assess growth, development, and nutritional status. The word derives from Latin statura, related to stare, “to stand.”

Measurement of stature is usually done with a stadiometer. The person stands barefoot, heels together, feet flat and slightly apart, with the body straight and the head in a neutral position. The measurement is taken to the nearest millimeter or tenth of a centimeter. In infants and very young children, recumbent length is measured lying down. Standard protocols also specify recording age and sex, since expected stature varies with these factors.

Stature results from the combined effects of genetics and environment. Genetic factors largely determine an individual’s potential height, while nutrition, health during childhood, endocrine function, and chronic illnesses influence realized height. Population averages differ by region and over time; secular increases in average stature have been observed in many countries with improved living conditions and nutrition.

Clinical use centers on growth assessment. Short stature is commonly defined as a height more than two standard deviations below the mean for age and sex, while tall stature is more than two standard deviations above. Evaluations consider growth velocity, parental height, bone age, and potential disorders such as endocrine, systemic, or skeletal conditions.
