Statiegeldflessen

Statiegeldflessen are beverage containers subject to a refundable deposit system in the Netherlands and other Dutch‑speaking regions. The term combines “statiegeld” (deposit) and “flessen” (bottles). The deposit is applied to plastic, aluminium and glass bottles and is intended to reduce litter and encourage recycling.

The system evolved in the 1960s when consumer confidence in waste management was low. In 1978 the Dutch government introduced the first binding deposit law, which required all beverage companies to supply bottles with a €0.10 deposit. The law was amended in 1989 and again in 2006, raising the deposit to €0.28 for plastic and aluminium and introducing a separate fee for glass. The deposit is refunded at return points—most commonly supermarkets and self‑service kiosks—when the empty container is brought in by the consumer.

The deposit has led to high collection rates; in 2022 it was reported that more than 90 % of statiegeldflessen were returned. The returned bottles are sorted, cleaned and reprocessed, either directly into new beverage containers or into other plastic products.

Implementation of a deposit scheme reduces litter in public spaces and oceans, cuts landfill usage, and promotes a circular economy. Critics argue that the deposit can create logistical costs for retailers and that high deposit values can deter return behaviour for certain buyers. Overall, the statiegeldflessen system is considered a successful public policy tool for waste reduction.
