Standortgerecht

Standortgerecht is a German adjective used in economic, planning, and policy discourse to describe actions, products, or policies that are adapted to the conditions of a specific location or region. The term combines Standort (location, site) and gerecht (fair, appropriate, suitable), conveying the idea of alignment with local requirements rather than applying a uniform solution.

In practice, standortgerecht refers to tailoring choices to local conditions such as market structure, legal framework, climate, infrastructure, culture, and labor markets. It is often invoked in discussions of pricing, product design, infrastructure planning, and organizational policies to emphasize context sensitivity rather than one-size-fits-all approaches.

Examples include standortgerechte Preisgestaltung, where prices reflect local purchasing power and competition; standortgerechte Infrastrukturplanung, which accounts for local geography and existing networks; standortgerechte Arbeitszeitmodelle or policies that align with regional labor regulations and employment patterns; and standortgerechte Produktgestaltung, which adapts features or compliance requirements to regional needs and preferences. In planning and public policy, the term signals support for solutions that fit the site’s conditions rather than exporting standard models.

Standortgerecht is closely related to the concept of Standortfaktoren (location factors) in economics, which identify the specific advantages and constraints of a place. Critically, while site-specific adaptation can improve relevance and effectiveness, it can also raise costs, complicate standardization, and risk unequal treatment if not based on objective criteria.
