Sputumnäytteiden, or sputum samples, are biological specimens collected from the respiratory tract, specifically from the lungs and bronchi. These samples are crucial for the diagnosis and management of various respiratory diseases. The primary purpose of collecting a sputum sample is to identify the presence of pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi, that may be causing an infection. It can also be used to detect abnormal cells, like those found in lung cancer, or to assess inflammation within the airways.

The collection process typically involves the patient coughing deeply to produce sputum, which is then collected in a sterile container. For accurate results, it's often recommended to collect the sample early in the morning before eating or drinking, as this can yield a more concentrated specimen. Multiple samples may be required, especially if a specific infection is suspected or if the initial results are inconclusive.

Once collected, sputum samples are sent to a laboratory for analysis. Common laboratory tests include microscopy, culture and sensitivity testing, and sometimes molecular diagnostic methods. Microscopy allows for direct visualization of microorganisms or cells. Culture and sensitivity testing aims to grow any present microorganisms and determine which antibiotics are effective against them. Molecular tests can detect specific genetic material from pathogens or cancer cells. The results from these analyses guide healthcare professionals in making accurate diagnoses and formulating appropriate treatment plans for patients with respiratory conditions.
