Sprickväxttester, often translated as crack growth testing or fatigue crack propagation testing, are experimental procedures used to determine how a material behaves when a crack is present and subjected to cyclic loading. These tests are crucial in material science and engineering for assessing the durability and fracture resistance of components, especially those that will experience repeated stress over their lifespan.

The fundamental principle behind sprickväxttester is to monitor the rate at which an existing crack in a material sample extends under applied cyclic stress. A pre-cracked specimen, often a compact tension or three-point bend specimen, is subjected to a controlled loading program. This loading typically involves a minimum and maximum stress applied repeatedly, creating a stress intensity factor range at the crack tip.

During the test, the crack length is carefully measured at regular intervals. This measurement can be done using various techniques, such as visual inspection with crack opening displacement gauges, electrical potential methods, or compliance methods that analyze the stiffness of the specimen as the crack grows. The data collected allows engineers to plot crack growth rate (da/dN) against the stress intensity factor range (ΔK).

The resulting da/dN vs. ΔK curve is a characteristic property of the material. It reveals different regimes of crack growth, including an inert region at low ΔK, a Paris law regime where the crack grows predictably, and a rapid fracture region as ΔK approaches the material's fracture toughness. This information is vital for predicting the service life of components, determining safe operating loads, and selecting appropriate materials for specific applications, particularly in aerospace, automotive, and structural engineering where fatigue failure is a significant concern.
