Unlike traditional coaching methods that may focus solely on winning or performance metrics, sportcenteredness places equal importance on personal growth, enjoyment, and holistic development.

The principle was popularized by former NCAA basketball coach John Wooden, who famously stated, "It’s not so much the winning of games, but the doing of one’s best that counts." Wooden’s philosophy extended beyond basketball, influencing how coaches, administrators, and organizations approach athlete development. Sportcenteredness encourages a culture of respect, accountability, and mutual growth, where coaches act as mentors rather than just instructors.
