Spolku

Spolku is the genitive, dative, or locative singular form of the Czech noun spolek, which means an association or society. In ordinary and legal writing, spolku appears as the inflected form of spolek in phrases such as “o spolku” or “ve spolku.”

Spolek refers to a voluntary association of persons who come together to pursue common interests. In legal and civil-society contexts, a spolok (Slovak equivalent spolok/spolok) is typically non-profit and organized to achieve shared aims, such as cultural, sports, charitable, or professional activities. The term encompasses a range of forms, from informal clubs to formally registered entities.

A registered spolku (zapsaný spolek in Czech law) is a legal entity with its own personality. It is usually formed by a founding agreement and statutes adopted by the members, and it operates under a governing body, often a general meeting and a board. A registered spolku must observe statutory requirements for governance, transparency, and reporting, and its assets are generally used to support its objectives rather than to distribute profits to members.

Differences from commercial organizations are central to the concept: a spolku pursues public or member-benefit objectives rather than market-driven profit. While it may generate income, any surplus is reinvested to advance its aims. Spolky play a significant role in civil society, providing spaces for voluntary participation, cultural exchange, and community service in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
