Speedcubers

Speedcubers are competitors who try to solve twisty puzzles, most commonly the 3x3 Rubik’s Cube, as quickly as possible. They train to reduce total solve time by improving turning speed, finger tricks, grip efficiency, inspection techniques, and recognition of patterns. Success in speedcubing combines practice, theory, and fast, accurate execution.

Several widely used methods guide many solves. The most common official approach is CFOP (Cross, First Two Layers, Orientation of Last Layer, Permutation of Last Layer). Others use Roux or ZZ systems. Beginners typically learn a layer-by-layer method and later adopt more optimized algorithms to minimize moves and time between steps.

Official events are administered by the World Cube Association (WCA). Competitions feature multiple puzzle formats, with the 3x3 event being the centerpiece. Finals are typically decided by the best single solve and an average of several solves, with a short inspection period before each attempt. The community also maintains rankings and records for various categories.

Prominent figures include Feliks Zemdegs and Max Park, who have held multiple world titles and pushed algorithmic development and training practices. The sport has seen contributions from many champions and a global community of enthusiasts, educators, and competitors sharing tutorials, timetables, and performance analyses.

Cube hardware is important; speedcubes are designed for fast, smooth turning with adjustable tension and reliable corner-cutting. Solvers use lubricants, mats, timing devices, and software tools to track times and analyze solves. The community emphasizes disciplined practice, sportsmanship, and ongoing learning.
